Lithium battery shipments supersized to skid level

Cathay Pacific Cargo’s biggest Fire Containment Bag enables bigger shipments

Cathay Pacific Cargo has been offering Fire Containment Bags that enable the carriage of RBI lithium-ion batteries (UN3480 PI965 Section 1A and 1B) on freighter aircraft for more than 18 months now. In view of the growing demand, Cathay Pacific is pleased to introduce a bigger option for bigger batteries and bigger shipments.

The new Skid-size Fire Containment Bag (SSFCB) offers greater capacity from the previously available 50kg maximum to a weight governed only by the skid’s gross weight limit. It is also suitable for loose cartons.

Following a successful trial that started last October, the SSFCB has proven that it exceeds world-class safety standards to the satisfaction of Cathay Pacific’s operational and safety teams.

As with the smaller bags, the SSFCB is made from a tested fire-retardant material and limits the supply of oxygen to any fire, while allowing smoke to escape to trigger fire warning systems on board.

The new bag is now available across the freighter network. Alex Leung, Cargo Products Manager, said: ‘Since the launch of our FCB solution in August 2019, the demand for battery shipments has been growing steadily, despite capacity constraints due to COVID-19. The enhanced size of the bag provides the same level of safety assurance and it is just as easy to order.’
